We Don't Have Our Data Stolen. We Hand It Over.

There's a narrative that goes: AI companies are harvesting our data. It implies something done to us passive, without consent, behind our backs.
There's a narrative that goes: AI companies are harvesting our data. It implies something done to us passive, without consent, behind our backs.
But that's not really what's happening day to day.
Every time you paste a client email into ChatGPT and ask it to rewrite it, you handed that over. Every time you upload a contract and ask Claude to summarise it, you gave that away. Every time you describe your business problem in detail to get a useful answer .. you submitted that information, voluntarily, in exchange for something useful.
We're not victims of data collection. We're active participants in it. We begging them to have our data.
The deal is actually pretty clear
The value exchange is real: you share context, you get genuinely useful output. That's not a bad deal. The problem is most people don't stop to think about what they're sharing, with whom, or what happens to it next.
The defaults matter. Some tools train on your prompts unless you opt out. Some don't retain data at all. Some store everything server-side regardless of what their marketing says. Most people never check they just type without thinking about the consequences. Yes is true that maybe Joe from his bedroom typing garbage in to an AI prompt is not much useful info...but the same Joe goes to work next day and because he's lazy, he will pass the confidential emails in to a prompt and get the answers and his job is done for the day. Good man Joe .. more time for chips and porn.
What this means practically
If you're running a business and using AI tools for content , for customer service, for internal documents then it's worth asking:
HOW GDPR COMPLIANT ARE YOU ? Does your client knows you are feeding this info / his info to meta or altman or anthrophic ? So basically if we don;t get a written consent from our clients we are breaking the LAW. Let that sink in for a moment..
